Within 60 km of Paris, the kings of France scattered their royal residences across the forests and plains of Île-de-France. From Versailles to Fontainebleau, from Vaux-le-Vicomte to Chantilly, this route spans seven centuries of royal splendour.
Versailles is closed on Tuesdays. Vaux-le-Vicomte is especially magical during its candlelit evenings (May–October, on certain Saturdays). Fontainebleau is best on weekdays to avoid the crowds.
