The Dordogne has one of the highest concentrations of medieval castles in Europe. Clinging to the limestone cliffs above the river, Beynac, Castelnaud and Les Milandes offer an exceptional medieval spectacle in an unspoilt natural setting.
Start with Beynac early in the morning to beat the coaches. The Sarlat market (Wednesday and Saturday) is a must. Allow half a day for each castle you visit.
