Coat of arms of Nord

The Nord is the department encompassing Lille and the Belgian border, a densely populated and industrialised region whose textile and mining heritage has left a deep mark on both the landscape and the culture. The Nord-Pas-de-Calais Mining Basin, with its slag heaps and workers’ housing estates, is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site as an exceptional testimony to 19th- and 20th-century industrial civilisation.

Lille, a regional metropolis and cultural capital, boasts the Citadel designed by Vauban — nicknamed the ‘Queen of Citadels " — and a Museum of Fine Arts whose collections, among the richest in France after the Louvre, bear witness to the Flemish and Burgundian influence in this region, long situated on the fringes of the great kingdoms. Bergues, a fortified town immortalised by the film Bienvenue chez les Ch’tis, Condé-sur-l’Escaut, Landrecies, Le Quesnoy, whose Vauban ramparts remain intact…

French Flanders, with its drainage canals and plains, the regions of Avesnois and Valenciennois, and the Estaminet, which keeps alive the tradition of Flemish beer-drinking conviviality, make up a region rich in contrasts and cultural distinctiveness that make the Nord one of the most endearing departments in France.
