The Historic Monuments Act and the growing tourist industry transformed many estates into cultural sites. Some remarkable contemporary creations did appear, however, drawing on traditional forms or exploring radical modernity. Today, many châteaux have been reconverted as hotels, event venues or wine estates, giving these ancient stones a vibrant new lease of life.
