Contemporary architecture abandons historical references in favour of resolutely modern forms and materials. Some old châteaux are converted into hotels, museums or event venues with unapologetically contemporary extensions; others are built from scratch, extending in their own way a French tradition of prestige residence, now freed from the stylistic codes of the past.
