15th-Century Castles — Flamboyant Gothic and Early Renaissance

The 15th century marked the gradual transition between the medieval castle and the Renaissance château. Military function gave way to residential comfort, though defensive features remained. Flamboyant Gothic introduced rich sculptural decoration, tracery and elaborate rooflines. The Loire Valley became the preferred theatre for this evolution, with châteaux such as Amboise, Langeais and Chaumont reflecting new tastes whilst retaining their towers and moats.
