Description & history

Built around 1245 by the lords of Renault to guard the ford over the Brenne, the château was initially no more than a motte-and-bailey fortification flanked by a square keep. The Hundred Years' War led to its fortification, then partial dismantling by royal order. It was in the 16th century that the residence took on its present appearance. The Beauregard family, enriched through the cloth trade, pierced large cross-windows in the blind walls, erected the spiral staircase that still serves the upper floors, and built the Renaissance wing whose sculpted dormers bear their coat of arms. The estate survived the Revolution without major damage: sold as national property, it was bought back in 1803 by the descendants of its former owners. The 19th century brought its English-style landscape park, designed by a pupil of Bühler, and its now-restored orangery. Listed as a Historic Monument in 1954, the château has been the subject of a thirty-year restoration project led by its current owners. The timber frames of the tithe barn have been repaired, the moat refilled with water, and the heritage kitchen garden replanted according to the 1836 cadastral plan. Visitors can now tour the medieval keep, the 18th-century salons and the troglodyte cellars carved into the tufa stone, where the estate's wines still age. The park, awarded the Remarkable Garden label, is home to a cedar of Lebanon planted under Louis-Philippe and a maze of century-old box hedges. Only vestiges remain today.
