Contemporary with Classicism but more exuberant, the Baroque style favours curves, plays of light and abundant ornamentation — broken pediments, dramatic sculptures, trompe-l'œil decor. Less widespread in France than in Italy or Central Europe, it nonetheless appears in certain châteaux through animated façades and spectacular interiors, where architecture becomes an art of staging and emotion.
